Unit History August 1944

HEADQUARTERS 18TH AIR DEPOT GROUP APO 520 AFAO No. 53, 15 September 1944.

SUBJECT: Historical Records.

TO : Commanding General, XV Air Force, APO 520, U.S. Army. (Attn: Historian) (THRU: Channels)

  1. Unit History of the Hq & Hq Sq, 15th Air Depot Group for the period 1 August to 31 August 1944:
    a. Facts relating to the origin of the unit:
    The present designation of the unit is Hq & Hq Sq, 15th Air Depot Group, presently assigned to XV Air Force Service Command.
    b. Changes in organization:
    Additional changes were made in command of the Group. On 7 August orders were received transferring the Group Commander, Lt Col H.H. Kaufman to the Continental United States. On 10 August Colonel Herbert F. DeWys assumed command. Major Robert P. Baker replaced Major H.W. Richardson as Executive Officer. Colonel DeWys came to the Group from 37th Service Group which he commanded. Major Baker came from the Air Maintenance Section of Hq, XV AFSC.
    Hq & Hq Sq, 96th Service Group was relieved from its attachment to this headquarters, and moved to Ancona to establish a new Service Center.
    c. Strength, commissioned and enlisted:
    At beginning 27 officers, 173 enlisted men.
    Increase during month: None.
    Decrease during month: 2 officers, 4 enlisted men.
    At end: 25 officers, 169 enlisted men, 2 officers and 17 enlisted men on detached service.
    d. Station: Foggia Main, Italy.
    e. Movements: None.
    f. Campaigns: Italian - Still in progress.
    g. Operations:

  The program of moving the various engineering shops to

one central location progressed satisfactorily, but was not yet completed at month's end.

  Several trips were made by the Depot pilots to Tunis

for the purpose of returning to Italy war weary B-25s for the administrative use of various service units.

  The engineering section constructed 50 sets of bomb racks

for the B-17s which flew to Bucharest to return air crews which had been imprisoned there. This job was done on an emergency basis, and completed in 45 hours.

  Depot Supply began moving to the site of the Fighter

Depot, and by month's end the move was nearly complete. Service was not interrupted during the transfer of any of the classes. When all classes are moved the entire depot supply will be at one location.

  Engineering work did not slacken during the month. A

total of 45 ships were processed and delivered. Hard stands were in the process of construction to provide a solid base for work during the approaching rainy season.

  Enclosed is the War Diary for this unit for the period

1 August to 31 August 1944.
