HEADQUARTERS 18TH AIR DEPOT GROUP APO 520 AFAO No. 53, 15 September 1944.
SUBJECT: Historical Records.
TO : Commanding General, XV Air Force, APO 520, U.S. Army. (Attn: Historian) (THRU: Channels)
The program of moving the various engineering shops to
one central location progressed satisfactorily, but was not yet completed at month's end.
Several trips were made by the Depot pilots to Tunis
for the purpose of returning to Italy war weary B-25s for the administrative use of various service units.
The engineering section constructed 50 sets of bomb racks
for the B-17s which flew to Bucharest to return air crews which had been imprisoned there. This job was done on an emergency basis, and completed in 45 hours.
Depot Supply began moving to the site of the Fighter
Depot, and by month's end the move was nearly complete. Service was not interrupted during the transfer of any of the classes. When all classes are moved the entire depot supply will be at one location.
Engineering work did not slacken during the month. A
total of 45 ships were processed and delivered. Hard stands were in the process of construction to provide a solid base for work during the approaching rainy season.
Enclosed is the War Diary for this unit for the period
1 August to 31 August 1944.
For the Commanding Officer:
/s/ Robert P. Gleim
ROBERT P. GLEIM,
