HEADQUARTERS 18TH AIR DEPOT GROUP APO 528
7 January 1944.
SUBJECT: Unit Operational History [handwritten notation "Outline History"]
TO : Commanding General, Northwest African Air Service Command, APO 528, U.S. Army.
December was a busy month for the unit. On 5 December the Service Group operating the base was transferred, and Colonel Jacway assumed command. Group Headquarters moved the Sub-Depot 21 Headquarters to Base Headquarters, combining both functions in one office.
Operation of the base involved an additional strain on overburdened transportation facilities. The situation was alleviated to some extent by the loan of ten trucks from Ordnance Depot No. 2. However, drivers were at a premium.
The numerous functions of operating the base in addition to Sub-Depot 21 placed a strain on manpower. The particularly important function of guarding the base was solved by the advent of a detachment of Senegalese troops to guard the perimeter and help of the British guards to assist our troops in guarding the gates and the interior of the base.
During the month Major Wade, returned from DS at 8th Port. Strength at end of month 18 officers and 147 enlisted men. S/Sgt Paul Meyer was sent back to the United States because of a defective heart. Two officers and six enlisted men remained on DS.
