Unit History Sept-Oct 1943

HEADQUARTERS

18TH AIR DEPOT GROUP, AIR CORPS

APO 528

15 October 1943.

SUBJECT: Unit Operational History.

TO     : Commanding General, Northwest African Air Service Command, APO 528. (THRU: Service Center No. 15, APO 528)

1. In compliance with letter, Headquarters XII Air Force Service

Command, Subject: "Historical Records", dated 2 January 1943, the following report of Unit Operational History from 15 September 1943 to 15 October 1943 is submitted:

Commanding the Group: Lt Col CLYDE C. JAMWAY, A.C.

Commanding Hq & Hq Squadron: Capt EARLE W. SEXTON, A.C.

   a. On 20 September 1943 the unit was attached to 41st Air Depot Group, operating Sub-Depot #1 of AFSC #2. It was given the task of operating the Intransit Section of the Sub-Depot, this activity having been formerly known as Trans-Center 27. The Commanding Officer, Lt Col Jamway, was made Sub-Depot Supply Officer.

   b. The operation of the Intransit Section was carried on in

three eight hour shifts daily. Approximately 100 men from Hq & Hq Squadron, under the supervision of three officers, were assigned to this work. Their labor was supplemented by the use of approximately 55 Italian prisoners of war.

   c. Of necessity the majority of the men in the squadron were

assigned to tasks foreign to their respective Military Occupational Specialty.

2. On 9 October 1943, 41st Air Depot Group having been transferred to another station, 187th Hq & Hq Squadron was placed in command of Sub-Depot #1, Lt Col Jamway assuming command on that date. The Sub-Depot Headquarters and Engineering sections were from that date operated by personnel from this

unit. However, the personnel theretofore operating the Intransit Section continued that phase of the Sub-Depot's activity.

3. During this period the Group Chaplain and Group Surgeon were transferred from the unit. One enlisted man died from accidental injuries and one was transferred. Finance Officer and enlisted men of his section (5), and one additional man remained on detached service. Strength as of this date 17 officers, 148 enlisted men.

4. Transportation remained inadequate to care for the needs of the unit. One ½ ton 4x4 truck (jeep) was assigned the unit during this period.

5. It is believed that a headquarters unit such as this is not being used to the best advantage when it is assigned to a task requiring primarily trained supply men.
