HQ PLACE 47TH WING, IX, B. Sq. Station: AMENDOLA, ITALY Month of MAY 1944 Prepared by: 2nd Lt. John R. Stevenson
1 Three Wing officers returned from a trip to Cairo, Egypt, on this date. They were: Lt. Col. John L. McLean, Wing Commanding Officer; Major James Gillis, Assistant A-3; and Capt. Lloyd Connelly, Wing Weather Officer.
2 Orders listing classification of civilian personnel from the 15th Air Force to serve as teachers in a classification of personnel in the Middle East and North Africa.
3 Lt. Colonel Jack Clemens, Officer, held a meeting of the Group Summary Officers with Lt. Colonel of the 15th regarding new training devices.
4 Major Wilburn J. Nichols, Marshal, and two gunners, Sgt. Mario Duvack visited the headquarters to report a malfunction. Regarding of the RECORD S.O.P. No. (1379).
5 Lt. Col. Robert C. Warren was assigned as assistant Chief of Staff A-3. Lt. Col. Arnold D. Moore Jr., A-3, inspected new plans on Targeting Day with the assistant A-3. Lt. Col. Warren, A-3, inspected a conference with all Group A-3's on matters pertaining to the new routing by night. Capt. Kirk L. Wallis prepared for duty as assistant A-3. Lt. Col. Herman Beye Jr., Chief of Staff; Lt. Col. William J. Brown and Major William left for a survey of fields north of FOGGIA.
6 Capt. Edward Appleby, who has been serving for Wing, past days, reported for duty with the Intelligence Department. A.A.F. Intelligence, and met with the North Air Base Security Officer, was assigned as Assistant Wing Intelligence Officer at Wing Headquarters Squadron. Lt. Farley, recently transferred, Station of Wing of XXII headquarters squadron, remained attached.
7 The Wing Commander, Col. John L. McLean, made an inspection of all staff sections after a typical flight and guidance mode. 1st Lt. Jack K. Griffin was assigned from the 429th Bomb Sq (H) Group to duty as Administrative and A-1.
8 Col. McLean briefed captains and photo Group accompanied by Col. Tate, Lt. Col. Warren, Air Inspector, and Lt. Col. Connell and Milton, statistical and other. 2ndLt. J. E. Prescission of the signal section was promoted to 1st Lt.
9 The Wing Commander and his inspection staff inspected the 429th and 476th Groups on this date.
10 Col. Rush and his A-2 and A-3, Lt. Cols. Thomas and Warren, were at the 15th Air Force for a conference.
11 Col. Robertson Jr. along was on leave on account of his son being on vacation list. Major Bradford, Chemical, assistant A-3, was transferred to the 315th Fighter Wing. 2nd Lt. Samuel Dunn assigned to staff aide each promoted to 1st Lt.
12 Orders were received for rations of four officers and 15 enlisted men to the 42nd Bombardment. Lt. Warren, A-3, Lt. Col. Smith, A-4, Capt. Kirk, A-3, Sgt. Bossier and Lt. looking all officers of the 42nd [?].
13 Lt. Col. Ewing jumped for A-3 district completed his temporary duty order and returned to the 15th extended 2 days. Capt. Kirk is attending to G-3 regular duties at Force Hqs.
14 Lt. Col. Arthur Timberlake, executive officer from 459th B.G., was in for visiting with Col. McLean and statistical office of headquarters.
15 Col. A.Y. Smith & Sanford P. Brownell all other permanent duties in May. He is spending vacation at San Rafael, Italy, on 15 day leave.
16 2nd Lt. Gerald J. Hall was assigned to A-3 as assistant A-3, the second assigned from A-3. 2nd Lt. [?] promoted to 1st Lt. 2nd Lt. assigned to duty of interior as plans 2nd Lt. [?]. [?] officer was promoted to Master Sergeant.
17 Sgt. Lt. James A. [?] was assigned from 429th Group to Weather Section. Lt. Col. Warren for all leave and Lt. A.B. [?] installed session duties. Col. Cohen is Gen. Twining and his visit to A-3 Daily Board on air crew.
19 Eleven officers of Sicily, and Capt. Mikkelson and Sohn reported from 301 to 429 Bomb Groups as briefing specialists.
20 Col. Rush and Col. Gates inspected the location of WWEFT by Col. Jim Keller. The construction was started at 18th Fighter base. [?] Base Personnel commanded the area and brought it officers at [?]. It was all set to transfer this operation from the enemy to [?]. Lt. Col. Merting, A-4, attended a planning meeting over roads at Foggia, Alt.
21 Group and other men received forwarded mail from the 42nd Tactical bombardment Group to Africa supplies.
22 Col. Rush conducted a conference of all Group CO's and his staff at the Wing Headquarters CO. Pernell [?], A-1(S) assistant A-3, was promoted to Major.
23 Col. Rush directed the A-3 to TM all Groups regarding to be on the alert for reading of the Italian parts of North Adriatic sea conditions on the 25th of May.
24 The XXII Tactical Group begun operations as of 0200 hours, 27 May 1944. Lt. Col. Thomas and Capt. White spent the day at 15th AF discussing ground defense of airdromes. SSgt. James E. McDonald was detailed as assistant Tech Inspector.
25 Major Michael S. Hunt, a veteran CO, and his adjutant, Capt. Parker, were assigned to the 459th Bomb Squadron executive officer. Lt. Col. Albert A. Wilson was appointed Squadron CO vice Major Hunt.
