ESCAPE STATEMENT                                                        10 November 1943

T/Sgt. Albert S. Romero, 19053167, 376 Bomb Group, 515 Sq. (B-24).

  1. Personal History:

Duty:     Waist gunner

Age:       26

Missions:  27

Returned to Duty:  26 October.

  1. Details of Capture:

Struck by AA over Messina 30 April.  Final blow delivered by ME-109.  Crashed in sea sixty miles off of Siracusa.  Rescued by Italian Red Cross Sea plane.  Medical treatment immediately.

  1. Enemy Interrogation:

First real interrogation at Monstary near Rome.  Questioned on altitude, missions, armament, base and also if unit was over based on Palestine.  Interrogator had route group took from states to Cairo.  Escapees were taken for a friendly walk in an endeavour to loosen closed mouths.  Questioning was at different intervals.  No pressure or threats.  Security was exercised.  Red Cross questionnaire was answered in part as authorized plus above address.

  1. Escape aids:

All food kits were in plane due to inconvenience in pocketing.  Purses went down with the ship.  S-2 lectures on Escape Security in event of capture were very helpful.
