BRASOV, RUMANIA - Aircraft Plant and M/Y's

Aircraft Plant

Little is known of this factory. It has been reported to be the largest producer of aircraft in Rumania and to have had a one-war capacity of thirty aircraft per month. It is possible that the Germans are taking a lively interest in this plant at present due to hard pressed facilities in other parts of Germany and Europe. Precise intelligence on this factory has been lacking. Wide scale bomber reconnaissance for this plant in recent months (either for reconnaissance or bombing) and information has been forthcoming that the Germans have moved machinery which was in Greece, engaged in repair work, into this area. Photography of recent date reveals that this plant is very active at the present time. Photographs of April revealed approximately 100 A/C, including 25 ME-110's.

The plant is about 90 miles NNW of Bucharest, 25 miles NNW of Ploesti and approximately one mile SE of the center of the city. The plant is located at coordinates are: 45 degrees 40 minutes North by 25 degrees 38 minutes East. The factory is divided into three main sections (1) Aircraft manufacturing section, (2) Aero-engine section. The aircraft manufacture and assembly is being conducted in the Eastern portion of the factory labeled on Target Chart No. 1 below. The Aero-Engine works are located in the Western portion of the establishment. Area (1) which lies in the Western portion of the site includes a foundry, machine shop, gun belts and two store sheds. The machine shops and foundry are of concrete construction with concrete roofs. The liquid adjustment shop are of brick with wooden roof frames. In the central area of the establishment lie all the office buildings. Two barracks, which have now been converted to an operational station. The two machine and assembly shops and the foundry constitute the primary objectives.

CAMOUFLAGE:

All buildings have been painted with dark paint to blend with the surroundings.

Railway M/Y's and Facilities

The railway facilities are extensive and lie on the main Bucharest-Ploesti-Budapest line, which is heavily used by the Germans for military supply movements, especially to transfer war goods from Rumania to the South Russian Front. Large maintenance engine sheds can accommodate 60 locomotives and the Station is used as a base for spare engines for traffic over the Pass to Ploesti. Destruction of this target and junctions indicated would necessitate major re-routing of traffic normally employing the main Bucharest-Ploesti-Budapest line and causing delays in through traffic. Extensive Spring Sidings and maintenance facilities reported to be very active. Photography of 16 April revealed approximately 1700 units of rolling stock in the M/Y's and various sidings.

The Railway Carriage and Wagon Repair Works is reported by a reliable source who left Brasov in March 1940 to have been constructed after he departed. Photography dated 19 October 1943 revealed considerable activity. Buildings comprising this well installation are in line in a ENE-WSW direction, near the SE boundary of the Brasov Airfield.
